Booking Through Thursday: Day and Night

Today’s Booking Through Thursday Question is suggested by Mae.

“I couldn’t sleep a wink, so I just read and read, day and night … it was there I began to divide books into day books and night books,” she went on. “Really, there are books meant for daytime reading and books that can be read only at night.”
– ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera, p. 103.

Do you divide your books into day and night reads? How do you decide?
Interesting question. Which I think is how I respond to any question I don’t have an immediate answer for. I think I’ll have to watch that and see if my theory is true.

I have to say I don’t. I tend to be rather monogamous with my books, and the time I usually read is at night. Reading during the day seems like a luxury that I can’t afford. As I typed that I realized I sound like those annoying people who say “I don’t have time for that” and really seem to be saying “you are wasting your time.” And that isn’t what I mean at all. Household chores seem never ending and overwhelming at the moment, but that’s an entirely different story.

That little tangent aside, I think the short answer is “no I don’t.” If I were to find myself in the circumstances of the original quote, I could see where it would be useful to separate the day, but for now I’m good with one book day or night.

  1. i was surprised when i thought about this for a minute and realized i do read different things at day and night, but that it depends more on the form of the book (if I’m going out, how big it is, or whether it’s on my kindle or not) than anything else.
